AWS Auto Scaling Sensor

AWS Auto Scaling Sensor monitors the parameters of AWS Auto Scaling Group. AWS Auto Scaling automatically adjusts capacity to maintain steady, predictable performance for your applications.

The sensor can track changes within the Auto Scaling group and observe multiple states of group instances. Thanks to it, you can find out about large variations in the number of instances that are running as part of the group, which can increase cost, and observe maximum group size which informs about maximal workload.

Requirements

To use AWS Auto Scaling you will need to provide Access Key ID and Secret Access Key. The user whose credentials are entered during sensor configuration needs access rights for CloudWatch queries.

Alerts

  • Running instances changed by > 80% - there was a very big change in running instances, which is cost-related.
  • More than 75% of the available instances are running

Performance Metrics

  • Group\Desired Capacity - Number of instances that the group attempts to maintain
  • Group\Maximum Size - Maximum size of the group
  • Group\Minimum Size - Minimum size of the group
  • Group\Pending Instances - Number of pending Instances. A pending instance is not yet in service.
  • Group\Standby Instances - Number of instances in a standby state.
  • Group\Terminating Instances - Number of instances that are in the process of terminating
  • Group\Total Instances - Total count of instances (in service, pending, and terminating) in the group
  • Group\Running Instances - Number of instances that are running as part of the group
  • Group\%Running Instances - Percentage of instances running (in relation to all instances)

Reports (Data Collectors)

By default, the sensor adds a report containing Group\Pending Instances, Group\Standby Instances, Group\% Running Instances, and Group\Running Instances charts. These metrics will be collected and available as a report or through Performance Trend Viewer
