Device Config Sensor

The sensor enables tracking changes to device configurations and stores multiple backups of device configurations using the telnet or ssh protocol.

The sensor allows monitoring and backup device configurations using the telnet or ssh protocol. It can detect configuration changes and allows storing multiple configuration versions. The sensor provides over 140 predefined device profiles. It supports a wide range of devices, including switches, routers, firewalls, and security devices.

It compares each version and stores the whole configuration in an encrypted database. When the sensor runs as part of the monitoring probe, it stores the latest configuration on the probe's hard drive, and history is kept in the central NetCrunch database.

Options

You should provide proper credentials besides typical connection settings such as connection parameters (port and timeout). A credential profile for SSH allows establishing a connection using a private key or with a username and password.

Protocol
Supported protocol is ssh2 or telnet. Some device models might support only one of them.
Config versions to retain
NetCrunch can keep up to 999 versions per device. The default is 10.
Enable mode
Many devices require switching into enable mode to perform specific commands. Additionally, a password might be needed after issuing the enable command. Please refer to your device documentation.
Enable password
Enter the password that will be supplied to the device after the enable command. Keep empty if not required.,
Hide secrets
Most device profile provides the ability to hide secrets by replacing passwords and keys with <secret hidden> text
Alerts
  • Alert if device config changed - Triggered if any configuration change is detected
  • Alert on authentication error- alert triggered when the connection was successful, but the login process failed
  • Alert on connection error- alert triggered when the device was not responding
  • Alert on Performance Threshold - set threshold on available counter values
Performance Metrics
  • Device Config.Sensor/Check Time - Sensor execution time in milliseconds
  • Device Config.Config/Size in bytes - Size of configuration obtained
  • Device Config.Config/Changes - Number of changes since the last configuration saved
