Monitoring Mail Services
NetCrunch allows monitoring mail content, mailboxes, and checking basic mail server functionalities using a round trip email sensor.
Node SettingsAdd Monitoring Sensor
NetCrunch allows various aspects of email monitoring.
Supported Protocols
All email sensors support IMAP4/S and POP3/S.
mailbox
Monitoring Mailbox - Mailbox Sensor
This sensor allows for monitoring of mailbox authentication, activity, performance, and size. You can check if the mailbox is properly processed by checking the oldest email in the mailbox or receiving the last message. The sensor is operating on the mailbox owned by another user, so the sensor is not changing the mailbox's content.
Available alerts:
- Authentication Error
- Connection Error
- Protocol Error
- Mailbox Activity Events: (if the oldest message is older than..., no new messages received in last...)
- Alert on Monitoring Sensor Counter
Performance Counters:
- Mailbox.Sensor.Check Time
- Mailbox.Properties/Number of Messages
- Mailbox.Properties/Size of Largest Message
- Mailbox.Properties/Size of Messages
data-email
Monitoring Emails - Data Email Sensor
The sensor allows triggering alerts based on email sender, subject, or body. It can match emails using simple text patterns or using parsing expressions (i.e., regular expressions, scripts). The sensor can extract data from email content and turn them into performance metrics.
Available alerts:
- Authentication Error
- Connection Error
- Protocol Error
- Alert on Email Message
- Alert on Status Object Change
- Alert on Monitoring Sensor Counter
Performance Counters:
- Data Email.Sensor/Check Time
- Data Email.Sensor/Received Messages
- Data Email.Object
In this case, the sensor must own the mailbox. It will automatically delete all processed emails.
email-round-trip
Monitoring Mail Server - Email Round Trip Sensor
This sensor is intended to check the mail server functionality by sending and receiving test emails. It must use a dedicated mailbox, and it removes test emails from the mailbox automatically.
Because the SMTP server might be configured to use a different IP address than POP3, you should add the sensor to the POP3 server, and then you can set the SMTP connection IP address separately.
Available alerts:
- Email has not been received
- Email has not been sent
- Authentication Error
- Connection Error
- Protocol Error
- Alert on Monitoring Sensor Counter
Performance Counters:
- Email Round-Trip.Sensor/Check Time
- Email.Round-Trip.Email/Receiving Duration
- Email.Round-Trip.Email/Sending Duration
- Email.Round-Trip.Email/Total Duration
