Monitoring Packs

NetCrunch Monitoring Packs allow efficient management of monitoring settings. You can use them to create monitoring policies by setting node filters. They can also be assigned manually to the node (or multiple nodes using multiselection). Currently, the program includes more than 270 ready-to-use Monitoring Packs for monitoring devices, applications, and operating systems.

The monitoring pack can monitor all nodes, a single Atlas view (a group of nodes), or a single node. It can also be restricted, so that it only ever applies to one kind of device — or to a sensor type, which is what lets one pack carry the alerting and reporting for a sensor wherever that sensor is configured.
A Monitoring Pack consists of two types of elements: alerts (alerting rules) and data collectors (used for reports).

Each alert is defined by the condition describing the event, and the action is taken when the alert occurs. By default, all alerts are written to the NetCrunch event log. Data collectors define performance metrics that should be collected to present data on dashboards and reports. Each data collector entry can have a schedule to generate reports automatically. If a schedule is not set, data are collected, and reports are available on demand.

NetCrunch includes many predefined Monitoring Packs with associated events and reports.

The monitoring pack created by the user (or duplicated from the pre-created monitoring pack) can be freely converted between static and dynamic mode. Use the option in the top right corner in Monitoring Pack settings to covert)

Restricting a Pack

A pack’s Restrictions setting limits both the events the pack can contain and the devices it can be applied to. The options are:

  • <No restriction>
  • Windows only
  • Linux only
  • macOS only
  • BSD only
  • VMware ESXi only
  • Solaris only
  • Sensors only
  • IP SLA only
  • Huawei NQA only
  • Proxmox VE only
  • SNMP only

IP SLA only and Huawei NQA only are present only where the license includes IP SLA.

Choosing Sensors only, IP SLA only or Huawei NQA only reveals a second control, Sensor Type, where you pick the type of sensor the pack is written for.

Monitoring Packs for Sensors

A monitoring pack can target a sensor type rather than a node. The same applies to IP SLA and Huawei NQA operations.

Set Restrictions to Sensors only and pick the type in Sensor Type. From then on the pack carries alerts and data collectors for that type of sensor, and you apply it by assigning a node on which the sensor is configured.

Reference Sensor

A pack defined against a sensor type has no sensor in front of it to inspect, so some alerts — and every counter — ask you to pick a reference sensor. That is an existing sensor of the same type, used only while editing, to read the available counters, statuses and instances from.

If no sensor of that type is configured anywhere yet, there is nothing to reference and the editor tells you so. Configure one sensor first, then build the pack from it.

Writing Rules That Survive

A pack applies to sensors you have not seen yet, so a rule that depends on the specific sensor it was written against will not travel:

  • Write rules that do not depend on sensor-specific data
  • For counters, use [All instances] or [Filtered instances] rather than naming instances, because the instances a sensor reports vary with how it is configured

A pack’s alerts and counters only do anything where the statuses and counter instances they refer to actually exist on the sensor. A rule naming something the sensor does not report is not an error — it simply never fires.
